To support the development of a whole child, earlychildhood teachers need to be equipped with what to teach—big ideas ofcontent knowledge, how to teach—instructional methods, and who to teach—knowledge of child development in cultural contexts. Thevolume delineates big ideas, developmental trajectories, and inquiry-basedpedagogies in three areas regarding early language and literacy development,including oracy, early literacy, and emergent writing. Each area is furtherdivided into several sub-categories. For example, oracy consists ofconversation, debate, narration, and explanation.

The What, Who, and How of Teaching Young Children in Visual Arts and Music

Editors: Yun Xu, Ting Ruan, Lin Lin, and Lin Li

Thisvolume includes two art domains: visual arts and music. Distinctive in theexpressive tools used and symbol systems employed, two areas, based on theauthors, share big ideas in three areas: appreciation, expression, andcreation. Children's work samples are included to illustrate how the big ideas progressover the years and what teachers can do to support skill development.

The What, Who, and How of Teaching in YoungChildren's Health and Physical Education

Editors: Qian Liu, Nian-Li Zhou, and Ye Zhang

Thebig ideas in this volume attend to various abilities key to young children'shealth and physical development. Specifically, the authors defined six sets ofabilities: body control and balance, body movement, use of equipment,self-care, safety and self-protection, and emotional regulation. The What, Who, and How of Teaching in Early Science

Thevolume engages early childhood teachers in discovering the concepts and skillsessential to early science education. The What, Who, and How of Teaching in Early Social and EmotionalLearning

Editor: Ming-Hong Zhang

Ofvital importance to the development of a healthy child rests on social andemotional learning. In so doing, the authors of this volume proposed fiveinterrelated areas, including self-knowledge, social interactions, pro-socialbehavior, social cognition, and sense of belonging. The role of teachers andparents is discussed with regard to promoting young children's social andemotional development.

Jie-QiChen, Ph.D., is Barbara Bowman Professor of Early Childhood Education atErikson Institute. Dr. Chen taughtinfants through middle school students in China and in the United States. For the last 30 years, she has been a teachereducator to work with pre-service and in-service early childhood teachers andstudy their development. Dr. Chencurrently serves on the NAEYC Governing Board.

JingZhou, Ph.D., is a professor of early education in East China Normal University,and she also serves as the Executive President of OMEP China. A leading scholarof language development in China, Dr. Zhou has published numerous books,articles, and practical guides for preschool teachers in the areas of Chineselanguage and early literacy development and bilingual education. She is also an author of many award-winningChinese children’s books.
